My PC died/New computer
« on: February 19, 2012, 04:04 pm »
My old computer died in a shower of sparks and smoke, got a new one yesterday, it's an HP, has a dual core AMD 64 processor, 4GB of RAM, 1TB HD, and a somewhat decent onboard graphics card. I can run Battlefield: Bad Co 2 on medium settings pretty smoothly. Oh, and finally I've rid myself of Vista.

If you are running a 64 bit OS, you should look into more memory down the road.

Vista sucked major ass. 7 is much better.

it has enough RAM slots to expand to something like 16GB, so that's always an option

Damn... I think it's time for me to upgrade as well. My computer in computer years is probably around 100 years old now.

If you are running a 32 bit OS, you only need 4GB of memory (that is the max it can use).

If you're running Vista or 7, it's definitely worth upgrading to at least 8 GB, considering that Windows uses 2GB just to run.

I have 6GB of RAM, and Vista still bogs down here and there. But I that is Vista.

I heard the Windows 8 is supposed be an efficient system because it was designed specifically for tablets.

Or you could switch to Linux or Free-BSD and dump Micro$oft all together. :)

Actually, some of the modern distributions like Ubuntu for example, have really taken linux out of the realm of the geeks.  No more manual bootstrapping or any of the crap.  Just run a setup program, and tell it what hardware you have (any that it doesn't pick up automagically) and when it's done, boots you right into and window manager.  Most people wouldn't even be aware they were running linux right at first, they would just think it's a customized windows desktop.

Now Free-BSD, that's not for the the feint of heart. :)
