Mormons feel mis-understood/ discrimiated against
« on: January 12, 2012, 08:51 am »
From: http://news.yahoo.com/pew-survey-majority-mormons-lean-republican-half-cite-050156570--abc-news.html

Quote
With Mitt Romney's Mormon faith often under the microscope, a new survey to be released Thursday finds that most Mormons feel they are misunderstood, discriminated against and not accepted by Americans as part of mainstream society.
In a survey by the Pew Research Center's   Forum on Religion & Public Life, a majority of Mormons cite   misperceptions about their faith, discrimination and lack of acceptance   as the biggest challenges facing them. Two-thirds, or 68 percent, feel   they are not viewed as mainstream by society, while six in 10 say that   Americans in general are uninformed about the Mormon faith. Nearly half   of those polled, about 46 percent, say there is "a lot" of   discrimination against their faith, while 54 percent feel that Mormons'   portrayal in television and movies hurts their image.
Evangelical Christians particularly are singled out by Mormons as the   group that is unfriendly toward them. In a previous Pew poll, roughly   half of evangelical Christians said Mormonism is not a Christian   religion, higher than the national average of 32 percent who feel that   way.
At the same time, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day   Saints express optimism about the future, with 63 percent saying that   acceptance of their faith is on the rise.
Amid questions about his faith, one point that Romney has repeatedly   made on the campaign trail is that he is a Christian, a sentiment that   is echoed in the survey. An overwhelming 97 percent of Mormons describe   themselves as Christians.
But the survey finds that a number of Mormon tenets are distinct from   other Christian traditions. More than 90 percent of Mormons surveyed   said they believe that God and Jesus Christ are separate physical   beings, that the Book of Mormon was written by ancient prophets, that   the president of their church is a prophet of God, and that families can   be bound together eternally in Mormon temple ceremonies.
The survey found that the group is highly religious compared with the   general public. Of those surveyed, 82 percent say religion is very   important in their lives, compared with 56 percent of the general   public.
Politically, Mormons are more conservative compared with the general   public, the survey finds. Seventy-four percent of Mormons surveyed say   they lean toward the Republican party, and 66 percent describe   themselves as conservatives, much higher than the national average of 37   percent. That political ideology is reflected in their views of   politicians - 86 percent view Romney favorably and 50 percent hold a   positive view of another Mormon candidate, Jon Huntsman. But   considerably less, only 22 percent, are supportive of Democratic Senate   Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is also a Mormon.

I know this article for the most part has to do with the elections, but I find the part about Mormons complaining they are discriminated against interesting.  On a personal one-on-one level there are no issues from here.  Hell, when I was in Salt Lake we visited their church and listened politely to what they had to say.  However, find this article ironic as they are doing the exact same thing to the GLBT community through funding things like prop 8 in California.

This is something that kills me about that group.  One would figure that a group whom has felt the bitter sting of persecution *After all, why did they flee to Salt Lake in the first place?* they would be more compassionate to others?  I guess they have not learned a damned thing, which is sad really as this is fueling animosity against the religion.

I tire of "groups" and individuals all claiming they are misunderstood and/or discriminated against.

In only a few cases is it likely to be real and in most cases an overestimation for political or other purposes. For the real ones, I feel you, but you're likely to get lumped in with the rest due to the overwhelming numbers.

As for the rest of them, boo-friggin-hoo. Cry me a river and get over the butt hurt already cause I'm tired of hearing about it.

I live in a town thats mostly mormon or catholic, 3 of my bosses have been mormon And i agree i had alot of misconceptions about them and there religion, My first mormon bosses Darwin and Kevin (brothers) who bought the dairy queen i worked, I found that if you just ask there more then willing to Tell you about there religion Heck me and darwin had a great talk one morning about his religion, the whole Marrying multi wives, there belief they die and go to a Planet. And so forth.. It was really intresting. In fact i am friends with a few of there Kids and never once has there religion caused a problem.. alot of people belive mormons are all gung hoe about converting people and Really they have never once brought up religion unless asked. And the ones i know can laugh about there religion and dont get all butt hurt..I always teased darwin about his 15 kids and wondering How he kept them all stright..:) So all have to ask If they are feeling discriminated aginst becuse of Romney

I think grocery stores should have a separate room for animal products where people under 18 are not permitted; Similar to a "porn room" at a video store. They should also have a separate check out counter and "discrete" packaging.

I thought that the modern LDS church was against polygamous relationships nowadays, so were your friends FLDS church members who still practice it?

Pretty much, being that we're poly doesn't really help our view of them.

i really dont see why so many folk are against plural marriage.  it sounds like a fantastic idea to me.  someone else can split the chores, and if anyone has a headache there's another warm person to play with as long as you aint picky about gender.  please name 1 "BAD" thing about that.

mormons didnt like me when we got into why i was praying wrong, why i had to pray to jesus instead of god, or pray "in jesus name"  why i couldnt just go directly to the man himself...  they tried to say it was disrespectfull, so i said "oh, so jesus is like a secretary, or an answering machine, he screens gods calls?"  they didnt like that, so they tried again, and said  (this was funny) "it's like if you had a friend and their dad was a cop, and you needed something from their dad.  you wouldnt just walk right up to their dad would you?"...    i laughed and said "if jesus is my very good friend, his dad knows me, and it would be really fucking rude of me to put MY good buddy jesus on the spot with his dad over my sillyness.  i have feet, i have a voicebox, i can walk my lazy ass in the den and ask jesus dad to come to court with me myself."

they kinda stood there open mouthed for a minute, then tried to get me to agree to try to pray their way, it would work better...  but i'm not having any issues now...

i havent been invited back to any bible studies, and mormons are the 1 religion peddlers we DONT seem to get.  we get jehovas witness, and some other weird assed group, but no mormons.  and i've moved numerous times since then.

Being married to multiple wives sounds neat because of the multiple pays checks and constant threesomes (can they do that?) On the other hand, two wives means two nagging wives.

I am not going to marry a second husband however.

But there is a difference in that FLDS are the ones into polygamous marriages and the LDS are against it.  The FLDS are more likely to dig up dead bodies to baptize them too.

i know, there's all kinds of complications and segregations about it all, but when you really strip it down to it's original finish, mormonism is some dude who ran scams, who got caught in 1 too many, so he talked fast, got a shitload of silly assed people to belive his completely imbecillic story about golden dinnerware that the ninja angels would only let him see, and only talk to him about, then, they took it all away when he let other folk know about them...  something he was supposed to do in the first place, spread the word... just somehow not like that?...

yeah

we're supposed to believe a ninja angel waved part of his cheesy alien bloomingdales wedding dinnerware set in front of a crazy, horse theivin, murderin, lil girl touchin weirdo...  and they told him all about god.

i suppose it's possible.  i have a cute hollyhobby plate here somewhere, it has something written on it, but i dont think it's a bible verse.  i think precious moments has the "shitty lead filled plates you cant eat off of with ugly children who need god because they're really ugly so  they have to print the bible verses right there on the plate" market cornered... but maybe it wasnt always so...

my thing with the Poly marriges Is its fine for Men to marry as many women as they want but if a mormon women wanted to marry more then 1 husband the church would have a heart attack.. I watch that sister wives show and he basically said That he would find it sicking if one of his wives or another mormon women Decided to marry more then one man. that seems a little Hypocritical to me???/

It is a guy thing really. Its much sexier to see two women go at it regardless of how horrible they may look than two hairy swety guys nail it in their ass. Call me whatever you want but it is the truth.
