Exotic Animals?

You've heard about the situation in Ohio right? It kind of caught my eye and I was wondering where a few of you stood on the issue. I think the owner was definitely a bit loopy and shouldn't have been allowed to own these animals in the first place, but I don't know if its enough of a reason to enforce a sudden ban on exotic animals in the state.

My concern is that if they do get banned, the animals just get killed because they don't know where to put them. I'm gonna guess that the zoos wouldn't have enough room to hold every animal that's out there, and the circus can be questionable.

The only information wh have outside of Bluzeman is what the press publishes, and they can be stilted. As for him not being allowed to own them, you can't just say no because you think he is 'loopy'. If he is following the regulations regarding the animals (and I haven't seen anything that said otherwise) then he has every right to own them, regardless of what people may think of him.

A ban is not called for. It is not right to punish other law abiding citizens because of the actions of one person.

I live in Zanesville.  In my opinion, the Sheriff did what he had to do.  No one took any pleasure in killing them.  However a lot of them were IN town.  A very small town.  Based on your IP address (Don't worry, only admins can see it and we don't give that information to anyone) you are in a pretty big city, so I don't think you can appreciate how small this town is.  And once you leave town, mostly rural ares for miles.  It's getting dark, and there are 50+ dangerous animals prowling around.  What would you have done?  And please don't say use tranquilizer guns, if you think that was at all a viable solution, then you haven't read much about it.  It was a horrible situation that had no workable perfect solution.  It was decided that the lives of the citizens, men women and CHILDREN in this town were worth more than those of the animals.  If you are an ara, you will disagree and I won't even waste my time arguing the point because it's fruitless.  Ara's have no compassion to their fellow humans whatsoever, only to animals.  They are a waste of air, and I would prefer to see all ara's extinct.

You say the owner was loopy and shouldn't have been allowed to own those animals in the first place.  What evidence do you have that he was loopy?  Oh sure, when he let the animals go and killed himself he was obviously pretty messed up in the head.  Something made him snap.  Just like something could make a person snap and they get in their car, drive to a busy spot and run over a few dozen pedestrians.  ANYONE can snap and do bad things.  But where is your evidence that he was loopy BEFORE this happened, and shouldn't have been allowed to own them?  I'm really curious, as I've lived in this area for about 12 years, and lived here an additional 17 years before I moved away in 1979.  So please, share this information with us, as I had no idea he had any mental defect, and most of the people in town that I know of didn't either.  I'm glad you were able to diagnose him, especially from nothing more than a few news reports.

I dunno how many of the different species this would apply to, but the monkeys they were concerned about them having herpes B. So I could understand them not wanting to make food out of the carcasses. Again, dunno of the ones shot, how many that would apply to.

That would explain why I got a text from my friend saying "THERE'S A HERPES INFECTED MONKEY ON THE LOOSE IN OHIO!!11"

I already posted a topic about this situation.  Though, as for what your concern is, i think they can figure somthing out other then shooting the animals if they want.

no jeffy, i dont think they can.  this isnt hollywood.  there isnt a script where it all gets to turn out nice and tidy, or even with just minimal loss.  it's real life where people dont have the time to consult all the hotshot authorities on that particular critters weaknesses, or whatever.  no time to dig pit traps, or rig up nets that only work in scooby doo...

I think Firefly is right. You have a bunch of animals that can't be released into the wild. If zoos, sanctuaries, and circuses can't take them, who will?

And how much would it cost to ship the animals, probably drug them as well, not to mention where they are to be held BEFORE the zoo can take them?

Well, then i geuss they'll do it only IF they have the money and they also WANT to do it they will.
But they probleley won't. They most likely won't spend that money.

how are they supposed to catch them jeffy?
we already covered tranquing isnt really viable.
pit traps and net traps like you see in scooby doo only work there.
when you put them in a real world place here in america, real human people are going to get hurt.
you cant just go to your local sporting goods store and buy a chimpanzee trap.

i dont know what other kinds of critter there were, but it's not likely you can wander down to the local ANYTHING and get a live trap for an "exotic" much of anything.

You have to collect them quick, too, Jeffro. You can't let some of them wander around town looking for dinner.
