well, i guess shooting fish in a barrel sounds boring as fuck, and so would shooting a lion in a crate, or a deer in a dog kennel.  but give the deer an acre or 2 to "run" on, and by all means dont pen them in like herd cattle any more than they do it to themselves, (remember the golf course i mentioned in a previous post) then it's not really "canned" anymore.

and yes, i agree, SOMETHING will usually eat the kill.  even if you dont.  in my case, if it was game i didnt care for the taste of, i have dogs and cats who will eat it.  if it was left in the wild, eventually something will eat it.  when an animal just collapses and dies, SOMETHING eats it.  even if it's diseased some scavengers have immunities to that.

I hunt, fish, fill the freezers every year with enough left over to help others. Probably put up 4 or 5k worth of stuff to justify my time and the expense. (by like 20 fold).

OMG Yum! Seriously made me hungry, there!

As for OP...I'm not *against* sport hunting, but I do applaud those sport hunters who donate the meat, whether to soup kitchens, tribes in Africa, etc...and those who do it for the trophy who then also stock their own freezer, or their friends'.

My opinion on hunting, as a whole, is - as long what you're hunting is in season, you have a permit to hunt it, and the kill shot is an ethical/clean shot, then it's good with me.

i still really dont see where it can be called "sport hunting" if the meat gets eaten.  as it stands right this very second, very few people "need" to hunt for food, some do, but there are grocry stores almost everywhere in this country.

but some people like to save money, and if you already have the "stuff" tags arrent that bad, if you're pretty sure you can get one, you'll save a lil bit in meat that year.  you gotta get good enough somehow, so "sport" animals, that you may or may not want to eat are a good way to improve your aim.  squirrels, dont even try to convince me there's a squirrel shortage, and in a few spots nearby you probally shouldnt eat the meat, or keep the fur, which would damn near kill me, but they carry the plague.  i dont know if you can get the plague from eating the squirrel, since it's actually the fleas, but still...   i'd a big enough "not fan" of the plague, i'm not chancing it, and i know how appetizing to fleas i am

It's sport hunting in the sense that the hunter is out for something other than meat, be it hides, horns, antlers or size. It's the bragging rights that someone got the biggest bull in the hills. Even if they take the meat, it's the trophy and the story that they're after, meat is just a potential bonus.

As long as the carcass goes to good use I don't care what people do. Shooting and taking a trophy while leaving the meat of the kill behind is not ethical in my book.

thats about where i stand med.

if you want to shoot something, fine, save some room in yer freezer, and go hunting, i would use pelts, i see no issue with pelt hunting if you use the pelts, BUT use the meat too.

sure maybe it's "sport" but if you eat it/use it,  it's not unethical in my opinion

That's where my opinion differs a bit. I don't mind leaving the carcass. Like I said before, something will eat it, nothing ever truly "goes to waste" (how many hunters leave "gut piles"?), and while I prefer the meat being taken, it's not *always* a really bad thing if it's left.

The only type of hunting I am truly against in ALL cases, are canned hunts. Simply because it is not hunting if you are shooting a deer in a box....that's shooting a deer in a box.  Now, if they were to quit calling it "hunting" and call it something more like "penned animal shooting" then wooo go for it, but it's not hunting damnit.

As long as you are using legal means, try to get a killshot, plan to use most of the body, or have a good reason to kill it (pop. control) the I don't mind hunting. It's when people break the rules, fail to have a decent amount of sportsmanship and basically are assholes about it---then I have a problem with it.

Same!

Kind of like the jerk who shot my Matty's already wounded buck, then claimed both shots were his.

[sarcasm]Cuz yeah, there's a total shortage of deer around here, and it's real hard to find your own, rather than stealing some kid's first buck ever. Oh, and btw, you were totally NOT trespassing on the property. [/sarcasm]

That's not including the gas it takes to run the car, the electricity to run the gas station, the water used to create the boat that brought your precious oil, the water used to create the pavement you drive on, the destruction of toxic chemicals that went into creating your clothes, and the electricity you use every day to send me stupid emails over the internet. Every year you are directly responsible for the consumption of billions of gallons of water. By driving your cars, you pump billions of tons of poison into the atmosphere and you're slowly killing us all. The computer you use requires 250 watts of electricity, let alone the billions of computers required to keep you on the internet. All consuming energy. All contributing to pollution.
