Sorry for the double post, but here's a pyramid you can customize for yourself.

So you can eat pasta 12 times if you want.

I wouldn't go to the USDAs website for nutritional information. They are so influenced by agribusiness, it might as well be owned by ConAgra. And they said "half your grains should be whole". Why not all? At least they are encouraging people to eat dry beans and leafy greens.

So, if the USDA is biased, then what source would you suggest? What would you change about the pyramid?

Oh do they now? Are they now?

ETA: I've danced this dance before.

I don't think you get the importance of the crop business when it comes to the USDA. Not only does it feed your vegan self, but it feeds livestock. And it regulates BOTH.

I'd like to think you would understand that.

God forbid you should eat grains and vegetables.

It's just an observation. I never said said vegetables were better than meat. I just don't think the USDA has the power it needs over big business. Time after time we here about USDA inspectors not being able to prevent tainted food from entering the food supply. Or even failing to report unsanitary conditions.

In the recent egg recall, for example. Inspectors noted all kinds of "unsatisfactory" conditions in the production plant. Even though they notified management it was business as usual and corporate interests outweighed consumer safety.

I feel that the USDA and the FDA don't have enough power to ensure food safety and that we can't expect it from the big food corporations. It's a real problem, in my opinion.

No, I don't work for the USDA and I never went to any agriculture schools. But anybody who follows the news can see that there is a problem here.

^^^ All of that are issues that were not what you originally state^^^^

And you are very right.

But don't try to bypass your statement:

I wouldn't go to the USDAs website for nutritional information. They are so influenced by agribusiness, it might as well be owned by ConAgra. And they said "half your grains should be whole". Why not all? At least they are encouraging people to eat dry beans and leafy greens.

The USDA doesn't have any more power to be biased than they do to fight the business they are up against.

I know this is a complete SHOCK to some ARAs.. because it is probably easier to burn a joint down. But the USDA sets the welfare and attempts to enforce it. The FDA is responsible for the finished product. The DA, or higher up, is responsible for charges.

And what is left?

When peanut butter gets tainted you have so many processes to go through, you can't just blame the peanut farmer. You can't just blame the shipper, the picker, the packager.. do you get what I am saying to you?

The "news" isn't a reliable source, sorry.

The problem with the news is that they want an answer right away.

Maybe if people focused their attention on supporting the evil USDA you wouldn't find rats in your damned rice bran.. just sayin'.

And real quick.. I'd like to point out (I just lost a huge post cuz my TXT file was too big sorry)

We have roughly 5000 inspectors TOTAL.. governed by less than two dozen cheifs.

The USDA isn't all about meat. It's about YOUR food, too. So why not expend resources for them. Instead of kicking them in the ass from your God Damned Lazy Chairs?!?

/Off Soap Box

And here's the most recent NASS TOTALS.. for everything.. like I said file too large..

I had to host it off my web design server real quick

Thanks for the file PoorSnookie. I'll be sure to peruse it when time permits me and see if I can't draw any interesting conclusions.

And in regards to bias in the USDA, if you are to look at the USDAs 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which I'm sure you are familiar with it recommends that Americans increase their amount of dairy intake.

So that's advice that Americans eat more cheese, more ice cream and more milk? In a country where roughly 1 in 3 citizens are obese.

We can assume that the justification for this is bone health. But trials and studies continue to show no relation in dairy intake and bone health. On the contrary, studies have show that dairy is related to an increased risk of prostate cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

This is just one instance of many that cause me to believe that the USDA is very much influenced by corporate interests.

The recommended intake for all food groups are an umbrella. With the assumption that people adjust their portions accordingly. And if you want to post studies that can back up the claims that dairy products are unhealthy, and especially that calcium has nothing to do with bone health, please do. The obesity claim has been beaten into the ground. I see it as a scape goat when someone doesn't have a strong argument. And still, you are carefully dancing around my answer to your claims about the USDA and quality procedures being purposely biased and faulty.

The USDA stands for the "United States Department of Agriculture."  They're the guys in charge of making policies about the agricultural business and make sure people follow code and everything stays healthy.

You people who believe what the USDA has to say are clearly buying into government propaganda.  Don't waste your time listening to their lies.  Get the real, unbiased information at peta.com.

Isn't that what you mean buddy?
