The Heart of a Soldier...

(1/1)

PostalBeanMachine:
I think that far too few Americans today have a very good understanding of our men & women in uniform. I can only speak from my own experience but I'm sure that most vets on this page will agree with me.

There are those who will say that the US military men & women are victims, forced to serve out their orders. When you go through the tough and rewarding training that the US Army (or any other branch) has to offer, you don't follow orders given to you by your superiors, simply to avoid the threat of "severe consequences", as some would describe them. When you are a soldier, you are part of a team. When you have a job or task at hand, you do it because the lives of the men and women you serve with are depending on it. In the greater scope of things, you do the job put before you because the overall success in any mission, depends on the strength, dedication and honor of the individual soldier. The very freedoms we enjoy as Americans, came because soldiers take their jobs very seriously and strive to perform at the best level they can. Soldiers are the backbone and ultimately the true symbol of American freedom, seconded only by our flag, Old Glory. I say second to the flag because that flag is something very close to the heart of a soldier. It means something more that just a national symbol.

When a soldier sees Old Glory spat on, burned or cast to the ground, it rouses a deep rage. It also brings a heavy feeling of sadness to that soldier. You see, to those whom have served and sacrificed under those colors, it seems so alien to believe that someone, particularly an American, would desecrate something which symbolizes everything a soldier loves.

I don't expect those who have never served to understand these things, I only attempt to give you a glimpse into the mind and heart of a soldier.
