You can also make a small "hot house" using a discarded glass window and a plastic or wood container. Set whatever you're protecting inside and set the glass over it. Last year, a squirrel ate part of a strawberry on my plant. This time, they took the entire strawberry (wasn't ready unlike the first one). I'll look around for some sort of cage.
